                Indian Literature

 Indian  literature is generally believed to be the oldest in the world . With vast cultral diversities. There are about two two dozens officially recognised languages in India . Over thousands of years huge literature has been produced in various languages in India . It is interesting to note that Hindu tradition have dominated a large part of Indian literature .These traditions are well reflected in great works like the Vedas and epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharta

  In medieval period ,literature inKannada and Tamil appeared in 5th and 11th centuries respectively . Literature in Marathi ,Bangala, urdu and various Hindi dialects began to appear as well . Sant Kabir and Tulsidas were the greatest exponents of Hindi Literature . At the same time Muslim literary tradition started dominating a large part of Indian literature .Muslim rule during this period develop Urdu and Persian languages .

     Early in the 20th century , Bangali poet Rabindranath Tagore become India's first Nobel laureate . He was awarded for the book "Gitanjali" , in 1913 .In contemporary Indian literature, there are two major literary awards . These are the Sahitya Akademi  Award and the Jnanpith Award .

        With the coming of British in India, books started to be written in English language . As more and more Indians become well versed with English , the English litrature began to grow. During contemporary times, numerous Indian authors made their mark on the world of English literature . Some of the most noted Indian writers are R.K. Narayan , Vikram Seth , Salman Rushdie , Arundhati Ray , Amitav Gosh, Kiran Desai , Arvind Adiga  and Anita Desai . About Indian literature Mark Twain had said....
